백제왕도 핵심유적 국제학술대회 개최 /8.20.∼21. 대전 유성호텔 -

  문화재청(청장 정재숙)은 오는 20일부터 21일까지 대전 유성호텔(대전시 유성구 소재)에서 ‘한반도 도시 외곽의 등장과 전개’를 주제로 학술대회를 개최한다.  
  * 외곽 - 성 밖으로 다시 둘러쌓은 성

  이번 학술대회는 백제 사비도성 외곽을 비롯하여 고대부터 조선시대까지 도시 외곽의 전반적인 변화를 비교·연구하고, 그 가치를 재조명하여 백제왕도 핵심유적에 대한 보존·관리정책을 올바르게 수립하고자 하는 취지다.

  첫째 날(20일)에는 제1부 한반도 도시 외곽의 출현과 전개(박순발, 충남대학교) 기조강연을 시작으로 제2부 ‘도시 외곽의 등장과 전개’를 주제로 5개 발표가 이어진다.

먼저, ▲ 고대 도시 외곽의 등장과 전개(김환희, 국립부여문화재연구소), ▲ 중세(통일신라~고려시대) 도시 외곽의 발달과 전개(박성진, 국립경주문화재연구소), ▲ 한양도성의 도시 구조적 특징과 변화 양상(남호현, 국립강화문화재연구소), ▲ 중국 도시의 외곽의 형성과 전개(장량렌, 난징대학교), ▲ 일본 도시 외곽의 발달과 전개(야마모토 다카후미, 니혼대학교) 발표로 시대·지역·국가별 도시 외곽의 발달과 전개과정을 살펴본다.

  발표를 통해 국립부여문화재연구소의 김환희 연구사는 6세기 등장하는 외곽의 축조는 고대 도성의 도시화라는 변화 속에서 백성들을 수용하기 위한 필요성이 대두됨에 따라 북조의 영향을 받아 자체적으로 지형과 상황에 맞게 수용한 것이라고 추정하였다.

  국립경주문화재연구소 박성진 연구관은 발표에서 통일신라시대 신라왕경의 변화양상과 후삼국시대 태봉 철원도성의 현황 그리고 고려 수도 개경의 형성과 변화에 대해 검토하였다. 국립강화문화재연구소의 남호현 연구사는 한양도성은 유교적 이념을 토대로 만들어진 도시 골격 속에 후대의 변화가 누층되며 완성된 도시로, 그 모습에는 현실 문제를 해결하기 위한 시도와 실패, 타협의 역사가 새겨져 있다고 추정하였다.

  남경대학교 장리앙런 교수는 중국 고대 도성을 3단계로 나누고, 각 단계별 도성의 변화와 성곽의 출현에 대해서 발표하고, 일본대학교의 야마모토 다카후미 교수는 고대 일본 도시에서 외곽의 출현은 외부 세력과의 접촉에 의한 것으로 추정되며, 특히, 백제의 멸망, 신라의 한반도 통일, 중국 당의 동방 진출이라는 특수한 국제 정세가 크게 작용한 현상이었다고 추정하였다.

  발표 후에는 충남대학교 박순발 교수를 좌장으로 한국과 중국, 일본의 전문가가 참여하는 종합토론이 펼쳐져 이번 학술대회의 성과를 점검하고 앞으로의 연구 과제를 제시한다.

  둘째 날(21일) 제3부 사례발표는 ‘발굴조사 최신 성과 및 세계유산 보존관리‧활용방안’을 주제로 ▲ 일본 조선식 산성의 등장과 전개과정(무카이 카즈오, 일본고대산성연구회), ▲ 부여 나성의 최신 발굴조사 성과(성현화, 백제고도문화재단), ▲ 백제역사유적지구 세계유산목록 등재 과정과 의의(이동주, 백제세계유산센터), ▲ 세계유산으로서의 부여 나성의 관리 및 활용(최희균, 백제고도문화재단)에 대한 발표가 이어진다.

An international symposium will take place to shed light on the emergence and development of city walls on the Korean peninsula
- The symposium focuses on key remains from Korea’s Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C.-A.D. 660) and is set to be held for two days starting Aug. 20 at Yousung Hotel in the city of Daegu

The Cultural Heritage Administration will hold an international symposium on the emergence and development of city walls on the Korean peninsula from Aug. 20 to 21 at Yousung Hotel in the city of Daegu.

This marks the first time that an academic conference dedicated solely to city walls in Korea, China and Japan is being held.
The symposium will delve into city walls that existed from ancient times to Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), including the walls of Baekje’s capital city of Sabi. It aims to compare and study them and ultimately reassess their value and come up with proper policies to preserve and manage the key remains of Baekje’s royal city.

On Day One, Aug. 20, Park Soon barl of Chungnam National University will give a keynote speech on how city walls on the Korean peninsula first emerged and evolved over the years. Five presentations will follow on this topic after the keynote speech.

They are as following: ▲ Kim Hwan Hee, a researcher of Buyeo National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will first give a presentation specifically on the city walls of ancient period; ▲ Park Sung-jin, a researcher of Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will then focus on the medieval times - from the Unified Silla period to Goryeo Dynasty; ▲ Nam hohyun, a researcher of Ganghwa National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will share his study of structural characteristics and the transformation of the walls of Hanyang, the capital city of Joseon; ▲ after which Zhang Liangren, a professor at Nanjing University will enrich the program with his take on the fortification of Chinese cities ▲ and finally, Yamamoto Takafumi, a professor at Nihon University will share his study of the walls of Japanese cities.

This will give insights on how city walls developed through different time periods and in different regions and countries.

Kim Hwan Hee will explain in his presentation that the construction of the city walls in the sixth century was inevitable as the ancient city capital was undergoing the massive change of urbanization and there was a need to accommodate the people. He says it was influenced by China’s Northern Dynasties yet modified to better suit Korea’s geographic features and local circumstances.

Park Sung-jin will share his research into how the royal city of Silla transformed during the Unified Silla period (668-935); the capital city of Cheorwon during Taebong (901-918) in the Later Three Kingdoms period (901-936); and how Gaegyeong (today’s Kaesong in North Korea), the capital of Goryeo (918-1392), was created and changed. Nam hohyun will go into detail about how Hanyang was initially built on the foundation of Confucius ideology but its identity was eventually formed through the layers of changes that different generations have brought about. He says it also embodies the trials and errors people experienced as they attempted to tackle life’s challenges as well as reflecting the history of compromise.

Zhang Liangren has divided ancient Chinese city capitals into three stages and will introduce walls of each stage, while Yamamoto Takafumi will argue that the city walls in Japan likely emerged through Japan’s contact with the outer world and was influenced by international situation like the fall of Baekje, unification of the Three Kingdoms on the Korean peninsula and Tang Dynasty’s attempt to make inroads into the Korean peninsula.

After the presentations, Park Soon barl will moderate a general debate which will evaluate the first day of the symposium and hopefully present tasks that lie ahead.

On Day Two, Aug. 21, there will be case presentations as following: ▲ Mukai Kazuo will present the study of mountain fortresses in Japan constructed by the Baekje people after the kingdom fell; ▲ Seong Hyeon Hwa of Baekje Culture Foundation will share the results of an archaeological exploration that recently took place in Naseong, Buyeo; ▲ Lee DongJu of Baekje World Heritage Center will talk about how Baekje Historic Areas was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the significance of this decision; ▲ Choi Hee Kyun of Baekje Culture Foundation will then discuss the maintenance and utilization of the Naseong, Buyeo.
